The group follows the guidelines of FIRST, a not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math. Teams work together to build robots that do specific tasks. Annual programs culminate in robotics competitions. Making the presentation were (left to right) Zac Duncan, Alli Ledford, Autumn Moffet, Andi Willis, and Mike Bingham. To achieve their goals, members are organized in four (4) groups - Programming, Design, Media/Finance, and Assembly. Participants follow the FIRST philosophy of "gracious professionalism" and "coopertition." Gracious professionalism encourages high quality work, recognizes the value of other people, and promotes respect for individuals and the community. Coopertition is the concept that members - even from different teams - can work together to solve problems, share knowledge, and help each other. The South Caldwell team was one of the original FIRST robotics teams in Western North Carolina. At their first competition, they won the top rookie seed and placed tenth overall. The 2012 season is the group's third year at competition. The first year, the team built robot to kick a soccer ball. In 2011, their robot picked up tubes and placed them on pegs. The 2012 challenge is to build a robot that throws a basketball into a goal. The Robotics Team needs assistance with funding. They solicit and receive help from businesses, foundations, fundraisers, and individuals. Persons interested in assisting the ROBOMonkeys should contact Michael Bingham, the team sponsor, at South Caldwell High School or send him an email to mbingham@caldwellschools.com.
